The data held within the GP medical records of patients is used by NHS England to support health and care planning and research in England, helping to find better treatments and improve patient outcomes for everyone.
NHS Digital has developed a new way to collect this data, called the General Practice Data for Planning and Research (GPDPR) data collection.
The Government announced on the 8th June 2021 that the planned data collection which was due to start at the beginning of July 2021 has now been delayed to September 2021.
What Will the Data Be Used For?
Patient data collected from general practice is needed to support a wide variety of research and analysis to help run and improve health and care services.
The General Practice Data for Planning and Research service will also help to support the planning and commissioning of health and care services, the development of health and care policy, public health monitoring and interventions and enable many different areas of research.
Opting out
If you don’t want your identifiable patient data to be shared for purposes except for your own care, you can opt-out by registering a Type 1 Opt-out or a National Data Opt-out.
To inform the practice of your wish to register for Type 1 Opt-out please complete the following forms and email them to the the practice (SHECCG.broomhill@nhs.net) or deliver them into the surgery. (This currently needs to be done by the end of August 2021)
You can also view or change your National Data Opt-out choice by the following methods (Please note this can be done at any time)
- Clicking on "Your Health" in the NHS App, and selecting "Choose if data from your health records is shared for research and planning".
Your individual care will not be affected if you opt-out using either option.

You can still use the system to request repeat prescriptions online.
In order to access this service you will first need to contact the reception to request a registration form. This will generate a unique set of details to enable you to register with the online patient access service.
PLEASE DO NOT COME IN TO THE SURGERY TO REGISTER FOR THIS SERVICE. IT CAN BE DONE WITHOUT THE NEED TO COME IN.
This can be done by telephone or email.
PATIENT MESSAGING SERVICE
We have a SMS messaging system allowing patients to receive appointment reminders and messages relating to your personal medical care direct to your mobile phone. This includes invitations to specialist clinics (such as influenza vaccination clinics)
We do not undertake any form of marketing.
This is an automated system and we have sent out a text message to all our existing patients to obtain their consent. New patients will be asked for their consent on registering.
